For those who might be interested:

Chiricú is an annual journal in which both new and established writers can appear side by side. All writers interested in U.S. Latino, Hispanic, or Luso-Brazilian issues and culture can submit works of prose fiction, poetry, essays, or art for consideration. Submissions are accepted in Spanish, English, or Portuguese.

Manuscripts should follow MLA style and be submitted via e-mail with a subject indication as "CHIRICÚ SUBMISSION" to crs@indiana.edu

I'm helping out with this, so if you have preguntas or questions of any sort... ¡dime!

semana 2

The time for decision-making has come and gone. And now it is back again.

Today, I read an essay by Octavio Paz, in which he says:

"Nos emborrachamos para confesarnos; ellos para olvidarse."
(poorly translated: We drink so that we can confess; they drink so that they can forget.)

And although he is talking about Mexicans (nosotros) versus UnitedStatesians (ellos), and although he talks about both identities in very essentialistic ways, I think he hits on some important concepts. Why do we do the things we do? Where do we find joy in our lives? And what do we hide from each other, or, more importantly, from ourselves? What masks are we wearing?

belated

Cheers & Happy New Year (belated).

Started classes this week: 20th century Spain and Colonial Latin American lit. I think it will be interesting. I am particularly interested in Colonial lit. I have always loved reading about history and about the colonists, pioneers, etc.

Also, I got a crock pot for Christmas.

And I was excited about it.

I fear I have become very domestic. Is that a bad thing?
