Thinking about getting a tattoo lately. But the only thing I can think of wanting on my body for the rest of my life are words, and aren't tattoos supposed to be pictures?

No, friend, words, images, word-images, whatever is worth making permanent, or paying homage to through permanency on your flesh.
A good friend of mine, a classmate, stellar poet, has words on her body in two places & counting. Had my blue-eyed phoenix been a word or phrase, that's what would be on my forearm now.
